Are single cylinder fun enough? We are convinced that it is. The KTM LC4 engine continues to be the benchmark in terms of performance and lightness in the mid-displacement segment and now, fully adapted to the Euro 5 emission regulations, it forms the heart of the new and reoriented KTM 690 ENDURO R and KTM 690 SMC R 2021. Offroad, onroad and supermoto sensations have never been shown at such a high level. They have never been shown at such a high level.
KTM has once again broken the idea about limits and boundaries with the KTM 690 ENDURO R. A machine with a proven offroad pedigree to overcome the longest and most demanding roads, incorporating the most advanced technology and engineering for make it an option suitable for any type of terrain or for any trip. It is the latest incarnation of the bike that two years ago set new highs in terms of ergonomics, electronics (with adjustable ABS options) and behavior, to become a benchmark in the Travel segment.
The 2021 KTM 690 ENDURO R is deceptive: it is a bike that appears powerful and intimidating for offroad use, but is actually a slim and manageable machine. Cornering ABS (that is, it is sensitive to lean angle), offroad ABS, traction control and engine brake regulation system ensure a customizable adjustment to any type of condition or terrain. WP XPLOR suspensions (inherited from the Enduro range and tuned specifically for the KTM 690 ENDURO R) offer grip, provide confidence and expertly channel the engine’s power delivery on the ground. The 74 hp of power and 73.5 Nm of torque make it perfectly suitable for long journeys on asphalt.
In the 2021 version, KTM has retained many of the bike’s refined strengths, but has applied a number of key updates that make the KTM 690 ENDURO R a good choice for those looking for impressive versatility. With this aim of improving practicality, KTM has added more functionality to the mode change switch on the handlebar: STREET mode enables dual channel ABS on both wheels of the bike. OFFROAD mode disables the rear wheel ABS so you don’t lose the important rear brake feel on low-grip terrain. The ABS itself benefits from a new modulator to better regulate the force and application of the required stopping power, which also means that it can be activated “on the fly” eliminating the need to do so via a “dongle” type adapter.
The new instrumentation includes an ABS “button” to provide the rider with a quick way to deactivate this assistance for complete and fluid control off the tarmac. This same screen now includes RPM and gear indicators. Regarding the aesthetics of the motorcycle, a striking new 2021 decoration and a revision of colors stand out.
The KTM 690 SMC R 2021 takes the torque and character of the LC4 engine into an exciting supermoto mode. Riders who love the thrill of linking chained bends on the road, beating traffic or playing drifting with the rear end on the track, will find in this bike all the technical resources they need both to generate speed and to make the most of it.
It is a motorcycle with a clear and uncompromising approach that has always represented the pure expression of how KTM understands motorcycling: a sporty, aggressive and extreme machine but above all, usable. This has been consolidated over the years thanks to the evolution of the high quality chrome-moly steel tubular chassis, together with WP APEX suspensions, a specifically supermoto ergonomics and an ABS with a wide range of electronic modes, such as Supermoto mode (deactivated on the rear wheel) and ABS when cornering (thanks to the lean angle sensor of the motorcycle).
The KTM 690 SMC R 2021 equips the same new ABS modulator as the KTM 690 ENDURO R, allowing its adjustment “on the fly” as well as the same new and practical instrumentation.
The KTM 690 SMC R features generous, high-quality Brembo brakes, with an improved system in this 2021 version. A Brembo M 4.32 monoblock caliper raises the bar for braking performance even further, biting with optimized stiffness a front disc of 320 mm (240 mm at the rear). The result is even greater control and feel at the rider’s fingertips.
Like its sister in the LC4 range, the KTM 690 SMC R embraces a new aesthetic that elevates its style and appeals to new heights. The bike offers a sharp and modern look to live up to its status as a KTM symbol of excellence in the supermoto category, both for use on the open road and in a track setup.
In addition, both models have a catalytic converter with new specifications integrated into the muffler of their LC4 engine, which allows them to fully comply with Euro 5 regulations. Likewise, both models can be offered in a limited version with a power of 35 kW to be driven. With permission A2.
