Some motorcycles are so desired that even if manufacturers don’t build them, passionate riders take matters into their own hands! Introducing the WR250X—a bike Yamaha never made but one that many enduro and supermoto enthusiasts have been waiting for.
This project started with the idea of making the YZ250 engine more versatile by installing a wide-ratio transmission (sourced from the WR400 and WR426). Some minor modifications to the engine case were necessary to make it fit, but the result is a setup that delivers more torque in lower gears while still maintaining a solid top speed.
What’s Been Upgraded?
- WR Transmission: Wider gear ratios for better control in technical riding.
- 13-Tooth Front Sprocket: Improved balance and power delivery over the standard 12T.
- Boon Super Cooler: A special cooling system for better engine performance.
- Rekluse Clutch: Auto-clutch system for smoother, easier riding.
- Rad Valve Upgrade: Enhanced throttle response and better low-end power.
Still a Work in Progress…
Not everything is running smoothly yet. Yamaha’s stock transmission sets are sold out, meaning a custom gear set is now needed. A manufacturer in South Africa produces them, so this project may take another step forward once those parts arrive.
This build raises the question—should Yamaha bring back a lightweight enduro with a wide-ratio gearbox? Could we one day see an official WR250X model?
